Contents & Purpose

This resource includes one, animated, 4 minutes long, video on the Olympic goods. It then offers ideas and resources on how to use this video for other disciplines such as English, Maths, Computing, Art, Music, Geography, History and Physical education. In the video we see a dark-skinned woman running through London when a giant (perhaps a titan) throws fire balls at her. She then reaches Zeus who throws his thunderbolt near her so she can catch it and use as a pole to jump over and face the titan. In the end, she and the titan clash and the final scene shows the Olympic torch. The movie is silent except for the accompanying music. There are no speaking parts or subtitles hence the movie is suitable for non-English speaking countries as well.

Further comments

This resource focuses on creative thinking but also shows that  the classics can be easily integrated with and contribute to other disciplines.

The silent video enables the students think harder on the scenes and try to describe what the video is all about using their own knowledge and imagination. The Titan appears as a bold creature, as if his body is made of rocks. It clearly shows Zeus as a positive character who helps humans. His appearance is of a mature man, very muscular, with white hair and beard. The fierceness of the female runner (Olympia) helps to empower the female students, since she is determined to complete her task and does not cower from the threat of the giant monster/titan.

In the English part, the students are asked to describe what they have seen and think about the background story. They are also asked to write a story of their own using the Olympian gods. The video itself does not refer to other gods, hence we may assume that the writing assignment also refers to the materials taught in class regarding the Greek pantheon.

Under History, the students are asked to find out more about the Olympic gods and create a poster.

Under Math, the students are asked to find different shape sin various parts of the video.

Under music, the students are asked to describe how the Music helps to enhance the video’s atmosphere.

Under Geography, the students are asked to identify the London landmarks shown in the video.

Under Physical education, the students are asked about the various sporting events in the Olympics and encouraged to organize their own sports events.
