PianetaBambini

Pianetabambini.it (accessed: January 3, 2021)

Contents & Purpose

The didactic cards provide children in the 5th grade of primary school with the rudiments of Greek civilization, through an overall account of geography, history, civilization and culture, including mythology.

The first seven sheets each deal with one topic: Whereabouts; The polis; The commerce; Art and culture; The theatre; Religion and myths; The Olympic games. Sheets 8-9 contain a final test.
Each of the first seven sheets open with a theoretical section with a brief prose text centered on the relevant aspect of Greek culture. The text is followed by an exercise aimed at verifying the understanding of the text and consolidating the recently acquired information.

Although the didactic cards are very concise, different kinds of images are also provided, which range the gamut from two geographical maps (pages 1; 3), to three realistic drawings (pages 2; 4), and cartoon illustrations scattered throughout.
Most exercises are fact-based and can be solved directly from the text above, but some of them require personal elaboration (for example, at page 4 children must apply the artistic ideas to the images of Greek statues reproduced).

Further comments

On PianetaBambini’s website it is possible to download both the full PDF package and the separate sheets. Greek civilization is categorised with in other subjects, through similarly conceived didactic cards on historical topics: Greek colonies; the polis of Sparta; the polis of Athens; the Persians.
