Further comments
This is a well balanced website, which refers to both elements of the series, the Greek mythology and also, pets. We should keep in mind that the series is also aimed to show the value of having a pet and how intelligent they are (keeping the NG long tradition of caring for animals).
Regarding the educator’s guide, in the opening letters by Rebecca Baines, Vice President, Editorial Director, National Geographic Kids Books, she writes “we hope you enjoy this book and will join our quest to bring an exciting new world of Greek mythology to middle-grade readers everywhere.” Hence the series’ aim is to promote reading but also to promote knowledge of Greek mythology to young readers.
There are various activities in this guide to enhance comprehensive skills: story map, knowledge of characters from Greek mythology related to the story and summation of the main ideas in a text. To all the suggested activities there is a long list of required standards which relates to literacy and language skills.
Hence the books and the accompanying website offer a complete educational plan. The series is fun for readers but can also be used to advance various reading and writing skills, using the theme of Greek mythology.
