Lanternfish

LANTERNFISH contains printable teaching resources for language arts, TESOL, TEFL and ESL.
Lanternfish ESL is maintained by a group of ESL (English as Second Language) teachers in Asia and North America. Our aim is to bring printable quality resources to teachers and parents.

Contents & Purpose

There are 5 activities in this group:
3 Greek gods crosswords
Olympians word search
Creative writing activity: electing a patron god for a city

Further comments

In this group, there is the addition of actual writing, with the task of electing a patron deity. On the worksheet it is explained that “The city of Olympia has decided to have an election for patron god of the city. You are the god(dess). and you want to be elected. You are going to give a speech to the citizens of Olympia to try to win their vote. In your speech convince the citizens why they should elect you and not another god or goddess.” The activity does not presuppose any god is the chosen patron, and each god can qualify for this activity.

In order to successfully accomplish this activity, the students must be well informed about the various traits of the Olympian gods and furthermore, on their benefits to humankind, and on what makes them suitable to guard over a city. This activity requires a high level of literacy, and also of analytical skills. The students are asked to make use of the information they have learnt about the gods and incorporate it into their writing.

The activities in this website show that even for a second language teaching, there are ample teaching ideas using mythology.
