Contents & Purpose

From the lessons’ Overview: “This series of lessons was designed to meet the needs of gifted children for extension beyond the standard curriculum with the greatest ease of use for the educator. The lessons may be given to the students for individual self-guided work, or they may be taught in a classroom or a home-school setting. This particular lesson plan is primarily effective in a classroom setting.

Assessment strategies and rubrics are included.”

6 lesson plans are offered, which mainly discuss the Olympian gods:

Lesson 1: Greek creation mythology: this lessons offers the ancient Greek view of the world, and an abbreviated tale about Gaia, Uranus, Cronus and Rhea.

Lesson 2: short biographies and photos of 14 gods:  Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Hermes, Hestia, Demeter, and Dionysus. Then the students need to fill in a chart which includes details about the gods: Roman name, Realm, Symbol and Characteristics.

Lesson 3: Mythology biographical poem: the students need to write a biographical poem about a god of his/her choice.

Lesson 4: Olympians quiz

Lesson 5: Putting it all together: a brief overview of reception of mythology, how mythology is present everywhere: in constellations, commodities (shoe company, tires, cars).
