Contents & Purpose

This online resource contains an interactive map of ancient Greece. When you click on one of the sites, an information text appears. If you click on the red words in the text, new information page opens up.

The information which appears on the map includes: Mount Olympus, Greek art, Troy, Greek clothing, Philosophers, Athens, The Oracle at Delphi, Olympia, Sparta, Trireme and Alexander the Great.

The site also offers an interactive ancient Greek quiz. It is tated on the website that it to parents as well as teachers. Teachers are provides with more content such as sample worksheet, lesson plans (more are available for a fee) videos and more.

Further comments

The interactive map helps the students as well as teachers perceive better the geographical connection between the ancient sites as well as receiving a better understanding of ancient Greece. It provides the setting to the ancient Greek world. The information is concise so that a younger user more easily understands it.

Every information topic leads to further interactive pages, which allows a broader coverage of ancient Greek culture.
The other pages include:

An interactive page on the ancient gods and goddesses. This page offers a picture of the gods/goddesses along with their names. When you click on the names you receive a short info text of the god/goddesses. For example, under ‘psyche’ it is written “Psyche was a princess who became immortal when she married Eros.” On Ares it is also mentioned that he was also Aphrodite’s lover. The presented gods and goddesses are: Poseidon, Hades, Hercules, Psyche, Aphrodite, Hades, Zeus, Ares, Athena, Artemis, Hestia, Apollo, Hera, Eros, Dionysus.

When you click on Alexander the Great you see a large statue of him. When you click on Food and Drink the page includes photos of grapes, barley, garlic, olives, wheat and wine, each with their own explanation.
When you click on “Greek art” you see a large vase and statue with brief explanation on their shape. On ‘Greek clothing” you see a family dresses as ancient Greeks with an explanation of their clothing.

The philosophers presented are Aristotle, Socrates and Plato.

When you click on the oracle, you see a large painted bowl of a supplicant and a brief explanation. In “Olympia”, you see a painted dish of a discus thrower with explanation.

On Athens, you see a picture of the city with the relevant sites marked for further information, for example acropolis, Parthenon, women, Clothing, food and the agora. Again, each of these items opens another relevant information page. Clicking on Sparta reveals a helmet and a brief explanation.
